The World Retail Congress is delighted to be supporting the Retail Director event. This is the second year that we have collaborated and reflects the growing importance of the Russian retail sector on a global stage.
The World Retail Congress took place in Barcelona in April and saw over 1,100 industry representatives from over 50 countries gather to discuss and debate the key issues that face retailing. Growth featured strongly in many of the sessions, which is unsurprising given the mounting concerns about the fall-out from the American economic and banking crisis that has been spreading around the world.
What was really occupying the minds of senior retail directors was clearly the need to build strategies for growth. One of the clear paths for growth was identified as international expansion which is why the Russian retail market with its highly attractive growth prospects figured so prominently in the discussions in Barcelona.
The twin themes of this year’s Retail Director: “growth” and “efficiency” match perfectly the mood of global retailing. All businesses have to grow of course, but in a time of economic uncertainty, rapid consumer change and increasing competition, this is not so easy to deliver. The retail winners for the future will therefore be those that respond fastest to change and focus on innovation throughout their business, from product to store design. It is also about efficiency throughout the business operation but as we heard in Barcelona, this should not mean simply cutting costs.
Russian retailing is evolving so rapidly that it is able to learn the lessons from around the world and incorporate them to create a modern, vibrant sector that is the envy of the world. Retail Director 2008 is therefore very timely and the World Retail Congress looks forward to hearing and participating in this important event.
